Search¶
GoDive has a dedicated Search tab at the bottom of the screen (the magnifying glass). It searches your whole log — dives, snorkels, buddies, sites, marine life, tags, trips, gear, certifications, and media — from one place.
Opening search¶
Tap the Search tab. The tab bar morphs into a search field at the bottom. The keyboard does not open automatically — tap the search field when you want to type.
The browse screen shows a Search title and ten category tiles in a 2×5 grid:

Tap a tile to browse everything in that category. Type in the search field to filter within the active category, or clear the category chip to search across all types.
Media browse¶
Tap Media to add it as the active search scope — just like the other tiles. Your results become a grid of every photo and video in your log, grouped by month and year (newest first) with the same right-aligned section titles used elsewhere in Search. Thumbnails show accent buddy (lower left) and fish (lower right) icons only when that item has tagged buddies or species. When an item has more than one tag of that kind, a small count capsule appears on the icon. Tap a badge to open the full-screen viewer with the same large overview sheet as dive Media — fish opens marine life, buddy opens buddies (toggle and + to tag more). A title shows how many videos and photos match your current search (for example, 3 videos, 12 photos). The Search field stays available at the bottom of the screen, so tap it and type to narrow the grid further.
Media filters the same way as every other category: just type. Your text matches a photo or video across all of its details — the dive site name, tagged buddies, activity tags, trip title, and tagged marine life. There are no special prefixes to remember.
Tap a thumbnail to open the full-screen viewer (same as trip media). In the viewer: Liquid Glass X upper-left (closes the viewer and returns to the media grid); plain #/# text upper-right. Bottom left is the Home-style dive chip (book icon, site name, dive # · trip when linked) — tap it to open the dive. Bottom right groups buddy and fish in one capsule Liquid Glass control; each icon is accent blue when that media has tags of that kind, otherwise white. On videos, a center Liquid Glass play / pause button controls playback. Tap empty media (not a control) to hide or show all of these buttons. Tap fish or buddy for the frosted large overview: fish/buddy toggle stays centered with tag + / Fishial sparkles upper-left while details scroll underneath with a soft fade; + opens the tag picker directly (and Fishial sparkles on fish when available). Tap a buddy photo to open their page; on fish mode, Learn More opens Field Guide for that species. Photos and videos stay visible underneath; videos keep playing under the overview unless you paused them. Dismiss the overview by swiping the grabber down or tapping above the panel.
Results¶
- One category — a flat list of matches with a count header on the back-button row telling you how many there are (for example
12 Buddies,8 Dives,3 Snorkels, or3 Sites). The header fades away as you scroll down the list and reappears when you scroll back to the top. For Tags, each row is a tag name with a dive count — tap to open the tag detail page. - Typed query, no category — sectioned results (buddies, media, sites, tags, trips, marine life, gear, certifications, then dives and snorkels). Every section lists all of its matches, so searching a buddy name shows every dive they appear on, not just the first few.
The Media grid shows the same kind of count header (3 videos, 12 photos), which also fades away as you scroll.
When you search across all types, any photos and videos that match also appear in their own Media section, shown second — right after Buddies. Media matches the same details as the Media grid: the dive site name, tagged buddies, activity tags, trip title, and tagged marine life. The section shows a grid up to two rows tall; if more media match, tap Expand to reveal the rest below (tap Collapse to shrink it back). Tap any thumbnail to open the full-screen viewer, and use the Home-style dive chip to open the linked dive on the map tab.
When a result matches on something that isn't its title, a small italic line appears under it telling you why it matched — for example Buddy: Mike, Dive year: 2026, Country: Mexico, or Marine life: Green Sea Turtle. If the match is in your dive notes, the line shows a few words of surrounding context (e.g. Notes: … swam with dolphins for a …). A dive can show more than one reason line when it matches in several places.
Tap a row to open the same detail screens you get from Logbook, Field Guide, Explore, or Profile — including tag detail (blue sheet with trip-style stats, tagged dives, marine life, buddies, media, and a hero media/map toggle). The keyboard dismisses when you open a result.
Going from category tiles to results is instant. Swipe from the left edge on the results list (or tap the back control) to return to the category tiles — that transition slides the results away and brings the bubble browse back in. Your query and category chip stay active so you can keep searching.
Tips¶
- Logbook, Field Guide, and Explore no longer have their own search bars — use this tab instead.
- Opening a result hides the tab search field while you read the detail; backing out restores your search session.
