Explore

The Explore tab helps you discover and manage dive sites — both catalog sites and sites created from your imports.

Map vs list

Use the leading toggle to switch modes:

Full-screen hybrid map (satellite plus labels) with red pins for sites.

  • Pin labels appear as you zoom in; fewer labels when zoomed out.
  • Tap a pin, then the label, to open site detail when available.
  • My Sites / All Sites scope filter which pins appear.

Logbook-style rows grouped by country, with dive counts when you’ve logged dives there.

  • Each row shows site name, coordinates, and place hierarchy (country, region, body of water). When the country is known, a flag emoji appears before that line (for example 🇺🇸 United States · Utah).
  • Tap a row for site detail.

Find dive sites

Use the Search tab and tap Sites (or type in the search field) to filter by site name, country, region, or body of water. Results include both My Sites (places you've logged or added) and unvisited sites from the bundled All Sites catalog. See Search.

My Sites vs All Sites

Toggle centered in the top bar (map/list on the left, + on the right):

  • My Sites — sites you’ve logged dives at or added yourself (including OpenDiveMap places you’ve visited — those follow your iCloud dive log across devices)
  • All Sites — full catalog including reference sites you haven’t visited

Explore opens on All Sites when your logbook is empty, and on My Sites once you have logged activities. You can still switch either way with the toggle. Changing scope refreshes the map pins or list.

Site detail

Tap a site to open an overview with:

  • Hero media from dives at that site, or a map when no media exists
  • Dive count and optional rating
  • Pager sections: Dive details, Dives here, Marine life here, Tagged media

Swipe between sections. Open any dive or species from these lists.

Add a dive site

Tap + (trailing on Explore chrome) to open the full-height blue form (no grabber). Use Cancel to discard or Done to save:

  • Name and place fields (tap Country to pick from a searchable list with flags; region and body of water stay free text)
  • Pick coordinates on a map (starts zoomed out so you can pan to the area) or enter them

You can also create sites during dive import, from manual dive entry’s new-site path, or when a dive has GPS but no matching catalog name.

Edit a dive site

On a user-created catalog site’s detail page, tap Edit to open the same blue form and change the site name, place fields (including the country picker), water type, entry, environment, max depth, and coordinates. Sites from the preloaded OpenDiveMap list are read-only — Edit does not appear. Dives logged here, marine life, and tagged media stay on the detail pages — they are not edited in this sheet. Star rating stays on the detail header.

Linking dives to sites

When you import or edit a dive, GoDive tries to link it to a catalog site by exact site name or GPS proximity. Linked sites drive map pins, Explore counts, and consistent naming on dive detail.

Trip planner connection

Saved planned sites on a trip appear in Trip detail and on trip maps. Explore rows opened from a trip omit personal dive counts when showing plan-only sites.

Reference sites in All Sites come from the bundled OpenDiveMap catalog — see Acknowledgments.
